D&BA Awards 2011

January is often seen as the least popular month of the year so Drum & Bass Arena thought they would take you back through 2011 and relive the top 20 singles from a huge year of Drum & Bass.

The singles have been chosen according to the number of units sold in their download store, so those big releases toward the end of the year may not feature, but there is no doubting that these are 20 of the very best from a standout year.

#20 - BLADERUNNER - TAKE ME HIGHER (TRUE BASS)

After a big year for Bladerunner, releasing his debut LP and a huge release on Critical he decided to bring forth his own label, 'True Bass' and 'Take Me Higher' was the first release on this label and it was a big one. The rolling piano loop and the trademark bladerunner breakbeat builds to a dancefloor smashing bassline that has been tearing up rave's with its rolling sub low frequency's all year.

#19 - LOADSTAR - BLVD (RAM RECORDS)

One of the most hotly anticipated releases at the beginning of the year as the D&B community waited to see if Loadstar (formerly known as Xample & Lomax) could deliver once again after the mammoth success of 'Links To The Past' and this was answered conclusively with the release of BLVD, with it's gorgeous strings, crisp beats, diva vocal samples and subtle vintage nods, definitely one for the collection.

#18 - SUB FOCUS - STOMP (RAM RECORDS)

After a meteoric rise in 2011 that has seen Sub Focus enjoy vast commercial success and brought both adulation and speculation from all corners of the D&B fraternity this storming release reminds us all of the underground style that Sub Focus is still capable of producing. It had been around a while, receiving a lot of play time from Andy C and causing hysteria on forums and messageboards alike with its booming bass and cheeky vocal sample, an ample tune for RAM 100.

#17 - INTERFACE - GET DOWN (CLEAR SKYZ)

Interface brought together his evident talent for production with colossal amounts of energy and life on his banging 'Voodoo Science' EP. With three other big tunes on the EP it is testament to just how good 'Get Down' is that it is seen as one of the catchiest bassline rollers to come out in 2011 by many. A rock solid tune from a very talented producer.

#16 - ERIC PRYDZ - NITON (THE REASON) (SIGMA REMIX) (MINISTRY OF SOUND)

Yet another Eric Prydz track to get the D&B remix treatment. After the success of High Contrast's remix of 'Pjanoo', the Sigma boys step up for remix duties with this epic remix of 'Niton'. Keeping the epic clubland euphoria and mixing it up with some rolling liquid beats Sigma manage to keep all the qualities of the original whilst blending these with the skank out vibes associated with D&B.

#15 -TAKTIX - IT'S THE WAY (SERUM REMIX) (APEXX RECORDINGS)

DJ Taktix should need no introduction and neither should the seminal 'It's The Way', an original jungle classic first released back in 1994 and the remix featuring Top Buzz's Mad P vocal is a benchmark tune to say the least. Serum's remix is exactly as you would expect from this talented producer as he brings the tune right up to date whilst keeping all the attributes from the original.

#14 - SIGMA - THE JUNGLE (SUB ZERO REMIX) (LIFE RECORDINGS)

Featuring on the popular 'Night and Day' EP, Sub Zero gives Sigma's 'The Jungle' a dirty remix treatment creating a filthy dancefloor banger of a tune in true Sub Zero fashion. A tune with a real sinister feel to it, definitely not one to meet down a dark alley with it's haunting interlude and evil vocals.

#13 - NOSIA - FRIENDLY INTENTIONS (VISION RECORDINGS)

A tune steeped in irony, the title suggests something completely opposite to what you are getting as it is plainly obvious from the very beginning that the Nosia boys did not have any friendly intentions when producing this destroyer of a tune. The relentless bass and biting snare make this one of the rowdiest tunes to grace 2011. Typical Nosia.

#12 - BREAK & DIE - SLOW DOWN (VIP) (SYMETTRY RECORDINGS)

'Slow Down', a tune that was so good it received more remixes than you've had hot dinners and this is the one that ranked the highest. The VIP, remixed by Break & DIE themselves brings a longer build up and a killer secondary drop. Definitely one of the most played out tunes of the year, smashing up dancefloors all over the country.

#11 -TC - TAP HO (DON'T PLAY)

Whilst we're on the subject of smashing up dancefloors, TC's Tap Ho, has been doing exactly that for the past few months whilst keeping people talking in regards to exactly what 'Tap Ho' means, we very much doubt it has anything to do with the images on the album art, hmmm. The massive stabbing synth lead stands out in the intro whilst the 'Tap Ho' vocal and dirty drop make for a typical TC killer.

#10 - DRUMSOUND & BASSLINE SMITH - CLOSE (ORIGINAL MIX) (NEW STATE MUSIC)

Drumsound & Bassline Smith's epic journey to test sub woofers to their limits continues with 'Close', a tune that renders you almost breathless from the very start, with its ramshackle arrangement of urgent beats, a super-charged dub and brilliant hook. The release comes with a plethora of remixes but it seems that you guys were content with the original.

#9 -SUB ZERO - POON (PLAYAZ)

This massively anticipated tune hit the number one spot in our download store straight after its release. 'Poon' had been attracting attention from the back end of 2010 with its irresistible Mampi-esque sample progression brought bang up to date. The stepping beats are underpinned by warping, winding and morphing bass notes that give new life to the dancefloor D&B formula.

#8 - ICICLE - DREADNAUGHT FT. DRS (SHOGUN AUDIO)

Icicle had not become part of Frictions Shogun Assassins for long when he dropped his first LP and whilst it was indeed of a very high quality, as you would expect from a man of Icicle's evident talent, it was 'Dreadnaught' that stood head and shoulders above the rest with its progressive bass stabs, rolling beats and the smooth flows of DRS on the mic, big tune!

#7 - FRESH - THE GATEKEEPER (RAM RECORDS)

Yet another entry from the prolific Ram Records, this time from a label guest in the shape of Fresh. Whilst many have said Fresh has become a tad commercial in 2011 this tune is a reminder of his raw capabilities. Taking a vocal sample from Wife Swap USA and merging it with some exhilarating, timeless jungle references and awesome bass meltdowns, you don't f**k with 'The Gatekeeper'.

#6 - ORIGIN UNKNOWN - LUNAR BASS (COMMIX REMIX) (RAM RECORDS)

The Ram crew are representing again with this big remix of a timeless track. There are not many who would dare attempt to remix such a seminal tune but Commix have stepped up and they have done it well. Keeping that slow, methodical rhythm and the deep bass but giving it even more of a dancefloor feel. This really cements Commix as being big in the game.

#5 - NERO - ME & YOU (DIRTYPHONICS REMIX) (VIPER RECORDINGS)

The original of this became a bit of a club anthem over 2011, crossing over many bass music genres as Nero have done so well of late, but this remix seemed to be far more popular in the D&B community. Dirtyphonics crank up the energy even higher with this heavy remix, keeping the same well known vocals but adding an extra layer of filth for good measure.

#4 - DJ FRESH - LOUDER (DRUMSOUND & BASSLINE SMITH REMIX) (MINISTRY OF SOUND)

The original of this might have done the unthinkable and hit number 1 in the UK charts this year but you guys seemed to think the much grittier and more underground sound of the Drumsound & Bassline Smith remix was far better, and I think we'd have to agree. The pace of the tune feels more 'ravey' with the heavy drums and rotating synths. The most popular of all the 'Louder' remixes in our download store.

#3 - CHASE & STATUS - NO PROBLEM (MERCURY RECORDINGS)

2011 saw the rise of Chase & Status in the music industry cemented with the release of 'No More Idols', their second, and far more commercialized LP. The boys changed up their sound a touch in this album, veering away from the D&B and more toward the Pendulumesque sound of bass heavy rock and dubstep. 'No Problem' was a stand out tune from the LP, mixing tribal vocals and drums with a mosh pit ensuing drop.

#2 - BREAKAGE FT. JESS MILLS - FIGHTING FIRE (LOADSTAR REMIX) (DIGITAL SOUNDBOY)

The first of two Loadstar remixes to grace the top two of our Top 20, an absolute banger of a remix of Breakage's already big 'Fighting Fire'. Loadstar grab the original by the scruff of the neck and get it moving from the 140 bpm mark up to the preferred 170 bpm mark whilst adding some deeper sub-bass and faster drums. It brings the tune from casual listening straight onto the dancefloor, something Loadstar inevitably do very well.

#1 - CHASE & STATUS - BLIND FAITH (LOADSTAR REMIX) (MERCURY RECORDS)

Drum & Bass roll please...the number one single from 2011 features two acts from the conveyer belt of quality that is Ram Records. Loadstar roll up for remix duties once more as they use Chase & Status' 'Blind Faith' as the canvas for another masterpiece. A tune full of anthemic vibes and old school junglist beats, perfect for the dancefloor and casual listening a like, with lovely vocals from Liam Bailey and those calming synths Loadstar have really delivered something special and this is a tune that is unquestionably worthy of it's place at number 1.
